First People of the Oak Ridges Moraine

Almost as soon as the ice retreated 11,000 years ago, the first people moved onto the moraine, hunting caribou and fishing. At this time, the Oak Ridges Moraine (ORM) would have looked like arctic tundra, with only a few small coniferous trees and sparse vegetation able to grow in the stark rocky landscape.

For the next 10,500 years, the people of the ORM continued to live a nomadic life until their agricultural methods improved, allowing them to establish permanent villages. At roughly the same time, European fur-traders began to arrive, and to exploit the many trails across the moraine that had been part of an existing trade culture for centuries.
