Places: A Few of the Fascinating Places to Explore on the Moraine
The landscape of the Oak Ridges Moraine has born witness to incredible stories of natural and human history. Once buried under an ice sheet that was several hundred metres thick, the ridge of high land that is the Moraine was one of the first landmasses in Southern Ontario to emerge from the last glaciation. Over the centuries, as giant glacial lakes receded from its margins and enormous trees took root in its well-drained soils, animals of all kinds including humans, have come to rest on the Moraine, occasionally leaving some trace. Portage routes built thousands of years ago by the first nations people became tracks used by United Empire Loyalists as they felled trees for cultivation and founded communities that persist today. Our continuing struggle to harmonize this population growth with the conservation of the Moraine is evidenced by the many places that we have set aside as special and invaluable.
